Decide What You Want – The Power of Sustained Imagination

The most important step in finding the right person is to make a list. Don’t ask for ‘someone nice’. Everyone is nice – we are all nice people. You don’t want to date everyone. Be specific. A ‘Wish List’ will help focus your thoughts. We all know what happens when you set a focused goal in your mind… it usually comes to you. So, use the power of sustained imagination in finding the right person. We advise clients to focus on the intangibles to begin with.

Your PRIMARY list should be qualities such as loyalty, fidelity, honesty, sincerity, sense of humour, compassion, kindness etc. Know that these will endure the length of the relationship. You should be looking for someone who shares your Value System. Then make your SECONDARY list – these can be things you enjoy in a partner, or enjoy doing with a partner – this can be changed as you meet different people and your views on things change through their influence. As you meet different people, keep your list in mind. You’ll find you will refine it as you go along. That’s fine.

Think about the last 3 relationships; ask yourself why you chose those people. If you think carefully you’ll find the common denominator that drew you to the wrong kind of person. Very often we go for what we recognize, what we know best … and not what is good for us. This kind of response is based usually on an early experience. Keep this in mind when making your ‘Wish List.’

The Gorgeous Factor – Physical factors can be important for some people e.g. height, weight, looks etc. However, in the long run, these will not survive the rocky road of life. You need to know and trust that the person you want to spend the rest of your life with will come out to rescue you in the middle of the night, or drive you to the hospital and stay there with you. You need to know that when everything is falling apart – that person is a support and mainstay. Great looks are great… but make sure there’s something underneath.
